NetTherm

NetTherm is a network-based thermometer and hygrometer. It contains sensors to detect both temperature and humidity, and provides this information to the user via the widely-used network management and monitoring protocol, SNMP, over a standard Ethernet interface.

There are several similar products available, but most either use suboptimal interfaces (serial ports, for example) or protocols which aren't suited to automated monitoring and logging (such as web-based units with temperatures presented as graphs). Those few products which are suitable for data center use tend to be prohibitively expensive.

NetTherm is a completely standards-based device. Any software that implements SNMP can access its temperature and humidity data. This makes it perfect for data center applications in which there is already an SNMP-based data gathering and presentation system in operation...common software packages such as MRTG and OpenView can poll NetTherm devices and present temperature and humidity data along with other data center information.

Here are some features of the currently-shipping version of NetTherm:

  • Standalone network device
  • 10/100baseT Ethernet interface
  • Serial port for configuration of network and monitoring parameters
  • Web interface for configuration of network and monitoring parameters
  • Implements DHCP for automatic network configuration
  • Configuration information stored in nonvolatile RAM
  • Very low power consumption
  • Implements standard ICMP messages for "ping monitoring", etc.
  • Implements the NTP protocol for accurate timestamps
  • Absolutely NO proprietary software required for setup or use
  • Generates SNMP Trap messages when configurable thresholds are crossed

NetTherm is a fairly ordinary product on the surface, but the design philosophies are somewhat unusual. This device was designed and built by me, in my home lab, as a commercial product. I produce reasonable quantities of them here, with very low overhead, and NO SUITS....and I'm not referring to attire.
